Step 2: Honestly and openly communicate your vein disease symptoms to the vein doctor.
Most people consult vein doctors when they notice spider veins and varicose veins. However, most patients don’t notice the other symptoms of vein disease, such as leg swelling, restless leg syndrome, leg heaviness, etc. That’s because the initial signs and symptoms are extremely benign and often mistaken for regular exhaustion or signs of aging.
To effectively communicate with your vein doctor, you need to understand vein disease and its symptoms. Vein disease, also known as venous insufficiency, is a circulatory disorder wherein the collapse of your vein valves leads to the accumulation of blood in your leg veins. The vein valves, in their normal state, act as one-way doors to ensure one-way blood circulation to the heart. As such, their collapse makes your blood flow backward due to the gravitational force.
Over time, as more blood pools in your leg veins, it applies pressure on your vein walls, leading to vascular dilation, which manifests outwardly as spider veins and varicose veins. Besides the visible leg veins, venous insufficiency also causes restless leg syndrome, leg heaviness, throbbing leg veins, leg pain, frequent leg cramps, and other such symptoms that people often dismiss as signs of aging or exhaustion.
During your initial consultation, you must highlight everything you feel to the vein doctor, even if they seem like no big deal to you. The vein doctor will also examine your leg veins to identify other possible signs of vein disease. They’ll also administer a diagnostic test called duplex ultrasound to visualize the blood flow in your leg veins, revealing the diseased saphenous vein.
Step 3: Your vein doctor will discuss your vein treatment options.
Once your underlying vein disease is diagnosed, the vein physician will discuss your vein treatment options. They’ll recommend the ideal varicose vein treatments for your diagnosis, cosmetic goals, insurance plans, and medical history, giving you all the information you need to make an informed decision. You can evaluate all your options, ask the vein doctor any questions you have, and decide how you want to proceed with the treatment.
Step 4: Proceed with the minimally invasive treatment of vein disease.
If you have underlying venous insufficiency, we start your treatment with radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, or VenaSeal. These varicose vein treatments will only address the underlying vein disease, not the visible leg veins. We don’t provide cosmetic treatments without addressing the root cause because that’s irresponsible.
The following is an overview of our varicose vein treatments:
- Radiofrequency Ablation: The vein doctor creates an incision on the skin’s surface to drive a catheter into the diseased vein and deliver thermal energy. The diseased vein collapses, and the accumulated blood freely reroutes into healthier leg veins.
- Endovenous Laser Ablation: The vein doctor creates an incision on the skin’s surface to drive an endovenous laser (catheter hooked to a laser fiber) into the problematic vein and deliver laser energy. The diseased vein collapses, and the accumulated blood flows into healthier leg veins.
- VenaSeal: The vein doctor injects a medical adhesive into the diseased saphenous vein to fuse its vein walls. The accumulated blood flows into healthier veins, and the diseased vein eventually gets metabolized by the body.
Step 5: Decide if you want a treatment for your cosmetic issues.
As mentioned earlier, the treatment of vein disease doesn’t automatically improve the cosmetic appearance of your legs, though it provides relief from other symptoms of vein disease, such as leg heaviness and leg cramps. If you want an improvement in your leg veins, you’ll need to undergo a round of cosmetic treatments, namely ambulatory phlebectomy or sclerotherapy.
The following is an overview of our minimally invasive cosmetic treatments:
- Ambulatory Phlebectomy: The vein doctor manually removes the superficial varicose veins through incisions on the skin’s surface.
- Sclerotherapy: The vein doctor injects a medicine called sclerosant to fuse the spider veins’ walls, turning them into scar tissues that are eventually metabolized by the body.
Step 6: Return to your daily activities but follow the post-treatment guidelines accurately.
All minimally invasive vein treatments are in-office and outpatient procedures that conclude within an hour with no downtime. After the treatment concludes, your vein doctor will discuss your recovery guidelines, such as wearing compression stockings for a few weeks, and you can leave the vein clinic. You may resume most of your daily activities immediately.
