One of our patients recently wrote, “I can’t say enough about how great my experience with Dr. Volney has been. He took the time to explain everything in detail and made me feel completely at ease. His staff are friendly and professional, and the office is spotless and welcoming. Highly recommend!”
Below, we provide a step-by-step overview of Dr. Jung’s famed varicose vein treatment process.
Step 1: Initial Consultation
During your initial consultation, Dr. Chalk or Dr. Volney will carefully examine your leg veins to look for the signs and symptoms of vein disease. Chronic venous insufficiency (vein disease) is the root cause of most vein problems, including spider veins and varicose veins. Venous insufficiency is a circulatory disorder wherein the collapse of your vein valves makes blood accumulate in your leg veins. The continued accumulation of blood in your leg veins leads to vascular dilation, which, in turn, appears as spider veins and varicose veins.
Most vein centers simply treat the spider veins and varicose veins without diagnosing the root cause. However, that solution is like painting over a peeling and mossy wall instead of fixing the leaky pipes underneath. Until you identify and address the underlying venous insufficiency, your spider veins and varicose veins will simply return. As such, our doctors carefully examine your leg veins at our Texas clinics to determine the likelihood of your having venous insufficiency.
Step 2: Vascular Imaging
Our doctors leverage the latest vascular imaging techniques to determine, with certainty, if you have venous insufficiency. They use a method called duplex ultrasound to visualize the direction of blood flow in your leg veins. Backward blood flow and accumulated blood in the leg veins are indicative of vein disease.
Step 3: Customized Treatment Plan
Dr. Chalk and Dr. Volney curate a minimally invasive and customized treatment plan to address your unique concerns. They review your medical history, insurance coverage options, cosmetic goals, and diagnosis to curate a treatment that provides long-term relief, improves your aesthetic appearance, and fits your lifestyle. Our doctors also discuss the insurance coverage options with each treatment at our Texas locations, helping you make an informed decision every step of the way.
Step 4: Medical Treatment
The medical treatment refers to the minimally invasive varicose vein treatment for the underlying venous insufficiency. If you have vein disease, we don’t treat the spider veins and superficial varicose veins until your underlying diseased vein has been addressed. The best minimally invasive procedures for medical treatment include radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, and VenaSeal.
During the ablative treatments, the vein doctor delivers thermal or laser energy into the diseased saphenous vein via a catheter inserted through an incision on the skin. During VenaSeal, the vein doctor simply injects a medical glue into the diseased saphenous vein. In all procedures, the diseased vein collapses, and the accumulated blood reroutes to healthier leg veins, restoring smooth blood circulation to the heart.

Step 5: Cosmetic Treatment
The cosmetic treatment refers to minimally invasive procedures that improve the aesthetic appearance of your legs without addressing the underlying vein disease. The best cosmetic treatments for spider veins and superficial varicose veins include sclerotherapy and ambulatory phlebectomy.
During sclerotherapy, the vein doctor injects a medicine called sclerosant into the spider veins to harden their walls, turning them into scar tissues eventually absorbed by the body. During ambulatory phlebectomy, the vein doctor removes the superficial varicose veins through small incisions on the skin’s surface.
Step 6: Recovery
The diagnosis and treatment are followed by post-treatment recovery and aftercare. The vein doctor discusses your recovery guidelines — you’ll have to wear compression stockings for a few weeks to ensure smooth blood circulation. You can leave the vein clinic immediately after the discussion, and you can resume your daily activities feeling significantly healthier and lighter.
